(More customer reviews)Update: Downgraded from five stars to one. The pop-top broke after just a few months of (daily) use, rendering this useless. Buy the Raya (link below). The Raya will clearly last for years and years. This is a fine bullet thermos, and I'm happy with the purchase. (Whoops! That's a brand name, but I suppose it's like BandAids and Kleenex. I'm not very likely to say "adhesive bandage" or "facial tissue", either.)
I'm posting in part because the product description is incomplete. Here's some more info:
1. I assume it's double-walled because it does keep things hot and the sides seem thick enough for that, though I can't promise you that.
2. The outside is "rubberized", though it seems a bit more like "plasticized" to me. It does help with the grip, but it's still rather hard and smooth.
3. The silver cap on the top screws off. I have occasionally used it for drinking, but as it's maybe 2-2.5 inches in diameter, it's mighty tiny for that.
4. It has a decent plastic inner top that's also screw on, and that comes off for filling, etc. This cap has a "pop top" serving thing at the top. Pop it in to pour, pop it again to seal it back up.
This does work well to keep things warm. I first noticed this after leaving half a thermoswhoopsflask full of tea in the car when I went in to work. After a day in sub-freezing temps, my tea was not hot when I returned 9 hours later, but I'll say room temperature. Still very impressive to me. Sinc the volume is relevant to retaining the heat, I tried the next day leaving a full thermoswhoopsflask in the car. It was 10 degrees when I drove to work that day and maybe 18 when I came home (7 hours later). My tea was not piping hot, but it was still pleasantly warm. I do find this pretty remarkable for a small container... it would be much easier to retain heat with a larger capacity,
When I got this, I was thinking I would carry it around with me in lieu of an insulated cup to drink from, because it will seal up and I could throw it in my book bag. It's not really great for that because you can't drink from the pop top (it sort of pours out the sides)... you can screw off the poptop, and I do sometimes, but then you're drinking straight from stainless and I find that unpleasant myself. But still, I'm very happy with this purchase.
Note: I just thought to check and the actual capacity of this is 16oz. I mean, if you left the top off, you could get 18 in there, but if you're planning on sealing it up, its capacity is 16oz.
Note 2: Soon afterward, I also got a Thermos Raya bottle:
Thermos Raya Stainless Steel Bottle - Blue
They are similar in their ability to keep things warm even in a Maine winter all day; I suspect the Raya is slightly better, but haven't actually done a side-by-side comparison. The Raya is much larger in outside dimensions and also has an actual 18oz capacity. The tops are different; the Raya has a standard Thermos top that allows partial unscrewing to be able to pour. I've found that I prefer carrying around the Farberware because it is physically smaller (and easier to fit in my bookbag). But really, both are excellent choices.
